Noorani Qaida Online for Beginners

Noorani Qaida is the starting point for reading the Quran in Arabic. It is a structured primer that builds reading ability in a fixed order: first the individual Arabic letters, then their shapes at the beginning, middle and end of a word, then the short vowels, then joining letters into syllables and words. Nothing is skipped, because each step depends on the one before it. A student who has not yet secured the letter sounds cannot read a word correctly, no matter how much they memorise.

Every class is one-to-one over live video. The teacher shares the Qaida page on screen, reads a line aloud, and the student repeats it back. The teacher listens for the specific things a beginner gets wrong — a heavy letter read light, a short vowel stretched too long, two similar letters confused — and corrects them in the moment. This immediate correction is the reason one-to-one works better than group study for Qaida: a mistake caught on the first attempt does not become a habit.

Lesson length and frequency are agreed with you directly. Most beginners do well with short, frequent sessions rather than long ones, because early Qaida work is repetitive by design and attention matters more than duration. Progress is tracked page by page, and a student only moves forward once the current page is read accurately without prompting.

The course covers the full Noorani Qaida sequence. Students begin with the 29 Arabic letters in isolation, learning to produce each sound from its correct point of articulation. Several Arabic letters have no equivalent in English, and these are taught deliberately and slowly rather than approximated.

Next comes letter recognition in connected form. Arabic letters change shape depending on their position in a word, and this is where many self-taught beginners stall. Students learn to recognise each letter in all of its forms so that a word on the page becomes readable rather than a set of unfamiliar shapes.

From there the course moves through the short vowels (fatha, kasra, damma), then tanween, then sukoon and the joining of letters into syllables. Students then learn the rules of elongation — madd — and the difference between a short vowel and a long one, which is one of the most common sources of error for new readers.

The final stage of the Qaida introduces the foundational Tajweed rules that apply at word level: the heavy and light letters, the rules of noon saakin and meem saakin, and the correct handling of stopping and starting. By the end, a student can read from the Quran itself with correct pronunciation, ready to begin structured Tajweed study or move on to memorisation.

Noorani Qaida is designed for anyone who cannot yet read Arabic script, regardless of age. The most common group is children aged four and above, who are starting from the beginning and benefit from the repetition and short lessons the Qaida is built around.

The second group is adults — often parents who want to learn alongside their children, reverts beginning their first study of the Quran, or people who learned to recite by imitation as a child and now want to read properly from the page. Adults sometimes hesitate to start with a children's primer, but the Qaida is a phonics system, not a children's book, and there is no faster route to reading Arabic accurately.

The third group is students who already recite but were never taught the letter sounds correctly. Returning to the Qaida for a short period is common, and it is usually quicker than expected, because recognition is already there and only the articulation needs correcting.

No prior Arabic knowledge is needed, and no ability to speak or understand Arabic is required. The Qaida teaches reading, not translation.

The first class is free and involves no commitment. It exists so the teacher can see where the student actually is — which letters are secure, which are not — and so the family can see how the class runs before deciding anything.

In the trial, the teacher will usually ask the student to attempt a few letters or a line, then set the starting page based on what they hear rather than on the student's age or stated level. Beginners start at page one; students returning to fix pronunciation may start further in.
